Hybrid Backup Sync

Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS 3) is a comprehensive software application for NAS (network attached storage) devices from QNAP that combines backup, synchronization and disaster recovery functions.

To configure Hybrid Backup Sync

  1. Create a baquette.
  2. Configure access to S3.
  3. Add space for backups in Hybrid Backup Sync.

1. Create a baquette

Use the Create Bucket instructions, when creating a bucket, select:

  • the type of buckets is private;
  • storage class - cold storage.

2. Configure access to S3

Access can be configured by the Account Owner or a user with the role of iam_admin.

  1. Create a service user with role with access to S3. If you have created a service user with the role object_storage_user or s3.bucket.user, the bucket must have a configured access policy and its rules must allow access to this user.
  2. Issue an S3 key to the user.

3. Add backup space to Hybrid Backup Sync

  1. Open the web interface of your QNAP NAS.

  2. If you do not have the Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS 3) app installed, install it through the App Center.

  3. Open the Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS 3) application.

  4. Go to Disk Spaces.

  5. Click Create.

  6. Select the space type Compatible with Amazon S3 and S3.

  7. Customize the space in the vault:

    7.1 Enter a name for the new space.

    7.2 Select Compatible with S3 in the Service Provider field.

    7.3 In the Server address field specify the S3 API domain. The domain depends on the pool in which you created the bucket.

    7.4. Select the subscription version - v2.

    7.5 Specify the pool in which you created the buckets.

    7.6 In the Access key field, enter the value of the Access key field from the S3 key of the user for whom you configured access in step 2.

    7.7 In the Secret code field, enter the value of the Secret key field from the S3 key of the user for whom you configured access in step 2.

    7.8. Check the Use a specific container checkbox and enter the name of the bucket.

    7.9. If your network settings suggest using a proxy server, check the Use proxy server checkbox.

    7.10. Check the Use SSL connection checkbox.

    7.11. Check the Verify SSL Certificate checkbox.

    7.12. Click Create.

Configure a backup job

  1. Open the web interface of your QNAP NAS.

  2. Go to Backup and Restore.

  3. Click New backup job.

  4. In the Select Folder step:

    4.1.Select the source folder to be backed up.

    4.2.Click Next.

    4.3.Select the space type Compatible with Amazon S3 and S3.

    4.4.Select the disk space you added when setting up Hybrid Backup Sync in step 3.

    4.5.In the Group Name field, select the bucket for backups.

    4.6.Optional: in the Size field for composite gear, change the value.

    4.7.Press Select.

    4.8.Select the target folder - backset for backups.

    4.9.Press OK.

    4.10. Enter a name for the backup job.

    4.11. Click Next.

  5. Optional: in the Schedule step, configure the backup schedule.

  6. Optional: in the Rules step, configure the backup rules.

  7. In the Summary step, click New.

  8. To start a task, mark the task and click Start.
