Locations: countries, regions, availability zones, data center pools and addresses

Last update:

With Selectel's products and services, you can create an infrastructure with all fault tolerance and security requirements taken into account.

Selectel's infrastructure is placed in different locations.

Location - the location of your infrastructure within Selectel's infrastructure, which includes:

The choice of location affects the management of availability, resiliency and load balancing in your infrastructure.

Now you can choose 4 countries for infrastructure placement in Selectel, which is divided into 6 regions, 11 availability zones and 26 pools.

You can see the availability of Selectel products and services in different locations in the availability matrices.

Country

A country (example: Russia) is one or more regions that are located within a single state.

In most cases, the division into countries does not affect anything and the main division of infrastructure is at the regional level. In some cases there are limitations for regions of different countries:

  • When using a global router, you cannot configure network connectivity between products that are located in different countries. You can only configure product and service connectivity between different regions within the same country;
  • S3 uses different domains for each country, and TLS (SSL) certificates are tied to the country - the certificate only works for buckets hosted in the region of the certificate's country.

Region

A region (example: St. Petersburg) is several availability zones with Selectel and partner data centers located within the agglomeration of a large city.

Data centers within the same region are usually located relatively close to each other - within tens of kilometers. They are connected by fiber-optic communication lines with data redundancy, and the minimum signal delay is ensured between data centers within a region. More information about data centers on the Data Centers page on selectel.ru.

Data centers in different regions, on the contrary, can be located hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away. Each region is completely isolated from the others: separate connection to power lines, autonomous power and cooling sources, dedicated communication channels. This allows to ensure geographical distribution of the infrastructure and its fault tolerance.

Selectel provides connectivity between regions through redundant high-capacity communication channels.

To host your application, we recommend choosing the region closest to your users as the main region. You can deploy resources in different regions - then the infrastructure will be able to survive possible ISP failures, such as internet outages at the border level, natural disasters and emergencies with minimal down time.

See the Selectel Infrastructure table for a list of regions.

Accessibility zone

An Availability Zone (example: Availability Zone 1 in Moscow) is one or more data centers within one region. Availability zones within one region can be located at different distances from each other - from a few meters to tens of kilometers. Each availability zone data center is equipped with autonomous power and cooling sources and its own redundant ultra-low latency communication channel.

Selectel backs up all critical elements of the system in the availability zone: power supply, air conditioning, network infrastructure. Each availability zone is provided with round-the-clock physical security and monitoring. Equipment maintenance operations are not performed simultaneously in multiple Availability Zones in the same region.

We recommend reserving critical parts of your infrastructure in multiple Availability Zones. Availability zones do not have a single point of failure - only the point of failure for the entire region. This will protect your system in the event of a failure in one of the zones, such as a power outage in the data center, fire, or weather events.

See the Selectel Infrastructure table for a list of availability zones.

Poole

There are several pools located in each data center and, consequently, in the availability zone. Each pool is isolated from hardware and software failures in other pools.

Network connectivity within a single-zone or multi-zone pool is provided by an L2 connection. A Selectel Global Router can be used to configure connectivity between pools.

For cloud infrastructure, pools are further divided into pool segments (example: ru-2a, ru-2b).

See the Selectel Infrastructure table for a list of pools and segments.

Single-zone pool

Single-zone pool (example: ru-9, SPB-4) - part of the infrastructure in one of the data centers of the availability zone.

Single-area pool segments are located in different racks in the same availability zone data center.

Placing infrastructure in multiple pools protects against network hardware and software failures (e.g., network hardware failure or power failure), and reduces the likelihood of data loss and service downtime. The single point of failure for single-zone pools is failures in the availability zone.

Multizone pool

Multizone pool (example: ru-6) - a part of infrastructure in several data centers of different availability zones.

The multi-zone pool segments are located in multiple data centers in different availability zones.

Placing infrastructure in a multi-zone pool:

  • protects against the effects of natural disasters and fires in data centers;
  • protects against network hardware and software failures (e.g., network hardware failure or power circuit failure);
  • Reduces the likelihood of data loss and service downtime.

The single point of failure of a multi-zone pool is failures in all availability zones in which the pool segments are located.

Increase fault tolerance

You can improve the resiliency of your infrastructure at the level:

  • hosts;
  • racks or pool segments;
  • pools;
  • accessibility zones;
  • or regions.

For example, to improve cloud server resiliency at the host level, you can place cloud servers on different hosts in a placement group. To improve fault tolerance at the rack and pool segment level, you can move a dedicated server to a different rack and a cloud server to a different pool segment. For fault tolerance at the availability zone level, you can place servers in different availability zones and use ru-6 multizone pool segments for cloud servers.
