Backup of cloud servers

Backup of cloud servers

Selectel provides infrastructure level services, so there is no default backup for cloud servers.

You can set up automatic backups or make a manual backup. You can view the tools in the table Backup methods.

An alternative way to create copies is to use scripts and utilities on a cloud server, more details in subsection Copy storage solutions.

How the backup is performed

  • manually

How to create a backup

You do not need to shut down the server or install software to create a backup.

You can:

  • customize the schedule automatic backup creation in the control panel. Scheduled snapshots of the disk will be created and transferred to the backup repository;
  • back up manually in the control panel

You do not need to shut down the server before creating a backup.

To make copies, you need enable agent backup: purchase a license, install the agent on the server, and configure backup rules and schedules. The agent creates scheduled copies and transfers them to the cloud repository

We recommend shutting down the server before creating the image.

Create an image from the disk in the control panel or through the OpenStack CLI

You do not need to shut down the server or install software to create a snapshot.

Create a snapshot of the disk in the control panel or through the OpenStack CLI

How to restore a backupWhen you restore from a backup, a new disk is created — you can connect it to an existing server, create a new cloud server, network disk, or image from it. You can only restore a full disk from a backup

You can back up:

  • using backup agents: at the file and folder level or at the partition level;
  • using Veeam Recovery Media boot disk — system partition or entire cloud server
The created image is stored in the image repository — you can create a cloud server or network drive from itYou can create a cloud server, network drive, or image from a snapshot
How many backups can be stored at the same time
  • If backups are created automatically on a schedule, the total number of backups in the project is unlimited. You cannot create more than 90 full backups or 14 incremental backup chains of one disk within one plan;
  • if backups are created manually, no more than 1000 backups in one project
Quantities are limited only by the amount of disk space ordered in the repositoryQuantities are limited only project limits on images — they can be enlarged through technical supportNo more than five snapshots for one disk
Storage reliabilityBackups are stored with triple replication on Selectel servers separate from disks, but in the same pool segment. You cannot change the storage locationCopies are stored in a cloud repository with triple replicationStored on Selectel servers separately from disks, but in the same pool segment. You cannot select the storage location. To improve storage reliability, you can imprint to another pool segment or download it and move it to a third-party infrastructure outside of SelectelStored on the same hardware as disks — so a snapshot is not a full backup. A snapshot is always deleted along with the disk

Alerts and monitoringCopies that could not be created are displayed in the interface with a status of ERRORThe console includes a set of default Alarms for backup monitoring. In the Active Alarms section, you can customize alarms according to monitoring conditions, enable and disable alarmsImages that could not be created are displayed in the interface with the status ERROR
Automatic verification of backup consistency and operability
We recommend checking the integrity and operability of the copies manually via restore from backup

Consistency check. We recommend that you manually verify that the copies are working properly by restoring from backup
CostEach GB of backups stored is paid for. Storage prices can be viewed at selectel.ruYou pay for an agent license (one cloud server — one agent) and repository space. Repository prices can be viewed at selectel.ruEach GB of stored images is charged for. Storage prices can be viewed at selectel.ruThe cost of storing a snapshot is equal to the cost of the disk from which it is created. Disk prices can be viewed at selectel.ru

Copy storage solutions

You can set up backups on a cloud server using scripts or utilities and arrange for them to be automatically transferred to Selectel storage or store external backups.

Object Storage

You can transfer the data yourself to Selectel object storage or script to automate the migration. You can back up any data from any storage media.

Use Rclone, S3cmd, AWS CLI or other tools to work with the repository.

File storage

You can connect file storage to a cloud server as external storage for NFS or CIFS backups. Configure the backup yourself using the utilities, and upload the copies to the file storage.

All data in file storage is stored in three copies.

Veeam Cloud Connect

If you use Veeam Backup & Replication™ or Veeam Availability Suite to create backups, you can move them to a cloud repository Veeam Cloud Connect.
