Backup of cloud servers

Backup of cloud servers

Selectel provides infrastructure level services, so there is no default backup for cloud servers.

You can set up automatic backups or make a manual backup. You can view the tools in the Backup Methods table.

An alternative way to create copies is to use scripts and utilities on a cloud server, see Solutions-for-storing-copies for details.

How to back up

You do not need to shut down the server or install software to create a backup.

You can:

  • configure in the Control Panel a schedule for automatic backups. Scheduled snapshots of the disk will be created and transferred to the backup repository. For more information, see Configure scheduled backups;
  • create a backup manually in the control panel. For more information, see Create a backup manually

You do not need to shut down the server before creating a backup.

To create backups, you need to purchase a license, install the agent on the server, and configure backup rules and schedules. The agent creates copies on a schedule and moves them to a cloud repository. More details in the instructions Connect backup by agents

Before creating an image, we recommend shutting down the server.

Create a disk image in the Control Panel or through the OpenStack CLI. For more information see Create an image from disk

Creating a snapshot does not require shutting down the server and installing software.

Create a snapshot of the disk in the Control Panel or through the OpenStack CLI. For more information, see Create a snapshot

How to restore a backup

When restoring from a backup, a new disk is created — you can connect it to an existing server, create a new cloud server, network disk, or image from it. You can only recover the entire disk from a backup

You can recover a copy of:

  • using backup agents: at file and folder level or at partition level;
  • using Veeam Recovery Media bootable disk — system partition or entire cloud server

For more details see Recovery from backup

The created image is stored in the image store — from it you can create a cloud server or network diskFrom a snapshot you can create a cloud server, network disk or image
How many backups can be stored at once
  • If backups are created automatically on a schedule, the total number of backups in a cloud platform project is the same as the total number of backups in the project. You cannot create more than 90 full backups or 14 chains of incremental backups of one disk within one plan;
  • if backups are created manually, no more than 1000 backups per project
limited only by the amount of ordered disk space in the repository Quantity is limited only by project limits on images — these can be increased through technical support No more than five snapshots per
Storage reliabilityBackupsCopies are stored in a cloud repository with triple replicationStored on Selectel servers separate from disks, but in the same pool segment. You can't choose where you want to store it. To improve storage reliability, you can move the image to another pool segment or download it and move it to a third-party infrastructure outside of SelectelStored on the same hardware as the disks — so a snapshot is not a full backup. A snapshot is always deleted along with the disk

Copy storage solutions

You can set up backups on a cloud server using scripts or utilities and arrange for them to be automatically transferred to Selectel storage or store external backups.

Object Storage

You can migrate the data yourself to Selectel object storage or create a script to automate the migration. You can backup any data from any storage media.

Use Rclone, S3cmd, AWS CLI or other tools to work with the repository.

File storage

You can connect file-storage to the cloud server as an external storage for NFS or CIFS backups. Set up backups yourself using utilities, and upload the copies to file storage.

All data in file storage is stored in three copies.

Veeam Cloud Connect

If you use Veeam Backup & Replication™ or Veeam Availability Suite to create backups, you can move them to the Veeam Cloud Connect cloud repository.
