General information about connecting to the Internet
For Selectel products Dedicated servers; Hardware placement; Cloud platform ( Cloud servers, Managed Kubernetes, Cloud databases); VMware-based Cloud a standard connection to the Internet (public network) is organized:
- Internet channel from data center service providers;
- public IP address from the Selectel IP address pool;
- control of traffic consumption according to the product's traffic consumption model;
- management of route information by Selectel.

If you need to use a block of your own IP addresses, Internet channel, control your own traffic consumption or manage routing information for all products, you can choose another way to connect to the Internet.
Ways to connect to the Internet
BGP connection
BGP connectivity allows you to use your AS and your own IP address block for the public network, as well as dynamically manage your routing information. At the same time, the Internet channel and traffic management (billing) remain on the Selectel side.
You need your own router to connect the service:
- For dedicated servers, a firewall, a hosted router, or routing software deployed on the server;
- VMware-based cloud — EDGE;
- cloud servers — routing software deployed on the server.
The router raises BGP sessions and terminates subnets.
PI prefix announcement
PI prefix announcement allows you to use your own PI (provider-independent) IP addresses for the public network. In this case, the Internet channel and traffic management (billing) remain on the Selectel side.
When a service is connected, a subnet is added for the product and the PI prefix of IP addresses is announced via AS Selectel.
Connection via BGP protocol + anycast subnetwork
BGP connectivity and use of anycast subnets allows you to use a public anycast subnet from the Selectel range in different pools.
When you connect the service, your AS is used or Selectel's private AS is allocated.
You need your own routers to connect the service:
- For dedicated servers, a firewall, a hosted router, or routing software deployed on the server;
- VMware-based cloud — EDGE;
- cloud servers — routing software deployed on the server.
The routers bring up two BGP sessions and terminate subnets. Both routers announce the same prefixes.
Direct Connect — physical port
Direct Connect — physical port allows you to organize connection to the Internet from a third-party operator.
When you activate the service, a physical port is allocated on the Selectel Access Switch to which you connect cross connect to the operator's equipment, the VLAN with this port is added to your account. You create a private global router network that connects your servers and VLAN to the operator's port. The operator on its router configures NAT from this private network to the Internet.
You organize the connection from the operator's side by yourself: you clarify the possibility of the operator's connection to Selectel, check the crossing, pay for the communication channels.
When connecting to the Internet using Direct Connect, you cannot assign public IP addresses from the operator's pool to your servers. To do this, find another way to connect to the Internet.
