Restore backup

You can recover:

Restore virtual machine

When restoring a virtual machine, it can overwrite the old version or restore to a separate VM.

Restore virtual machine with overwrite

  1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication portal. You can access the portal from Control Panel: VMware-based CloudBackupCustomize Backup.
  2. Open the VMs tab.
  3. Select a virtual machine.
  4. Click Restore VM.
  5. Select a restore point.
  6. Optional: To have the virtual machine start automatically after restoring, check the Power on VM after restoring checkbox.
  7. To restore only those data blocks that are necessary to return the VM to an earlier state instead of restoring the entire VM from backup, enable the Quick rollback (restore changed blocks only) option. Recovery time will be shortened, performance will not change.
  8. Press Restore. Before starting the restore, you will be warned that the backup will be deployed on top of the running machine. The running machine will be turned off and removed. The recovery status will be displayed on the same tab.

Restore a virtual machine without overwriting

  1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication portal. You can access the portal from Control Panel: VMware-based CloudBackupCustomize Backup.
  2. Open the VMs tab.
  3. Select a virtual machine.
  4. Click Restore VM.
  5. Select a restore point.
  6. Press Restore.
  7. Select keep. The BM will be restored side-by-side, without overwriting the current BM. The recovery status will be displayed on the same tab.

Restore vApp

  1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication portal. You can access the portal from Control Panel: VMware-based CloudBackupCustomize Backup.
  2. Open the VMs tab.
  3. Select a virtual machine.
  4. Press Restore vApp.

Restore virtual disk

  1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication portal. You can access the portal from Control Panel: VMware-based CloudBackupCustomize Backup.
  2. Open the VMs tab.
  3. Open the virtual machine page.
  4. Click Virtual Disks.
  5. In the Restore Point step, select a restore point.
  6. Press Next.
  7. At the Disk Mapping step, click Choose.
  8. Select the virtual machine to which the recovered disk will be attached. By default, the recovered disk is connected to the original machine. The target machine must not have any snapshots.
  9. Press OK.
  10. Mark the disks you want to restore.
  11. Optional: If you want to keep the original disk intact, click Change disk mapping and select a free controller node. If you do not, the recovered disk will connect to the same controller node as the original disk and overwrite it.
  12. Optional: if you want to change the type of the recovered disk, select the type in the Restored Disk Type field. If you do not do this, the recovered disk will be of the same type as the original disk.
  13. Optional: if you are restoring to the source machine and controller node, instead of restoring the entire disk from the backup, you can restore only those data blocks that are necessary to return the disk to an earlier state — to do this, check the Quick rollback (restore changed blocks only) checkbox. Recovery time will be shortened, performance will not change.
  14. Press Restore. The target machine will be shut down during the recovery process.
  15. Optional: To have the virtual machine power on automatically after disk is restored, select the Power on target VM after disk is restored checkbox.

Restore individual files

The file can be restored to the original virtual machine or downloaded locally. The files are restored through VMware Tools.

Recovering files in this way is limited in speed. To recover files totaling 10 GB or more, we recommend connecting to the recovery portal from a virtual machine and downloading the files. If the files to be recovered are 100 GB or more, the best solution is restore-virtual-disk and reboot the virtual machine.

  1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication portal. You can access the portal from Control Panel: VMware-based CloudBackupCustomize Backup.
  2. Open the Files tab.
  3. Click Pick from list and select the virtual machine where the file is located.
  4. Press Mount.
  5. Locate the directory and file.
  6. If you need to restore multiple files from different directories, add the desired files to the Add to restore list. All files will appear in the Pending Restore tab and can be restored or downloaded. The time of local upload of large files via browser depends on the used Internet channel.
