Edge routers

An Edge Gateway (EG) is a software router through which virtual machines access the network. An Edge router implements DHCP, NAT, Load Balancing, Firewall, Dynamic Routing, VPN, and other features.

At creating a virtual data center Edge router is automatically created Compact size — The smallest in terms of performance and cost. Basic Firewall and NAT rules are configured on it. You can manage the created Edge router yourself, change its size and rules.

The limit on Edge routers is common to the entire organization and is 20 units. To increase the limit, file a ticket.

Edge router size⁠

The size of the Edge router affects its performance. To improve the stability of the Edge router, avoid packet loss and other problems, we recommend that you increase the size of the Edge router to fit your load.

The size of the Edge routers created can be resized.

Edge router IP addresses⁠

IP addresses are assigned to the Edge router and are used to access the virtual data center from external networks, such as the Internet.

An Edge router is always created with a base IP address.

The limit on IP addresses is common to the entire organization and is 20 addresses. To increase the limit, file a ticket.

Add IP address⁠

  1. In control panel go to VMware-based cloud → Virtual data centers.
  2. Open the virtual data center page → tab Edge routers.
  3. In the Edge router card, expand the block IP addresses.
  4. Click Add IP address.
  5. Specify the number of IP addresses to add.
  6. Click Add.

Delete IP address⁠

Only IP addresses that you have added manually can be deleted. The base IP address cannot be deleted.

  1. In control panel go to VMware-based cloud → Virtual data centers.
  2. Open the virtual data center page → tab Edge routers.
  3. In the Edge router card, expand the block IP addresses.
  4. On the IP address line, click .
  5. Enter the IP address to confirm the deletion.
  6. Click Delete.

Edge router redundancy⁠

For your information

If you enable redundancy, the cost of the Edge router will double.

To increase the fault tolerance of the Edge router, you can enable Edge router redundancy (High Availability). In case of problems with the primary Edge router, it will switch to the backup router within 15 seconds. All settings of the primary Edge are automatically replicated to the backup Edge.

All network hardware is fully redundant. The failure of any network device will not affect the availability of virtual machines from public and local networks.

Create an Edge router⁠

  1. In control panel go to VMware-based cloud → tab Virtual data centers.
  2. Open the virtual data center page → tab Edge routers.
  3. Click Create an Edge router.
  4. Select the size of the Edge router.
  5. Click Create.

Change Edge router settings⁠

You can change Edge router size and connect redundancy (High Availability).

  1. In control panel go to VMware-based cloud → tab Virtual data centers.
  2. Open the virtual data center page → tab Edge routers.
  3. On the menu. of the router, press Change settings.
  4. Make the changes.
  5. Click Save. After resizing, the Edge router and the IP addresses on it may be unavailable for 30 seconds.

Enable SSH access to the Edge router⁠

  1. From control panel open the Cloud Director panel: VMware-based cloud → Cloud Director.
  2. Open the virtual data center page.
  3. Go to the section Networking → Edges.
  4. Open the page of the desired Edge.
  5. Click SERVICES.
  6. Open the tab Edge Settings.
  7. In the block SSH Status toggle switch Enabled.
  8. Configure the Firewall.

Remove the Edge router⁠

Before uninstalling the Edge router, delete routable IP addresses and networks on it.

  1. In control panel go to VMware-based cloud → tab Virtual data centers.
  2. Open the virtual data center page → tab Edge routers.
  3. On the menu. of the router, press Remove the Edge router.
