# Restart VDS server

Two types of VDS server reboots are available:

* [soft reboot](#perform-soft-reboot) without power-off;
* [hard reboot](#perform-hard-reboot) with power-off.

## Perform a soft reboot \{#perform-soft-reboot}

The server will reboot without power loss. The operating system will shut down correctly and start again.

If the server does not respond within a fixed time, a hard reboot will be performed automatically — in this case, unsaved data may be lost.

1. In the [Control panel](https://my.selectel.ru/vds/default/servers/), in the top menu, click **Products** and select **VDS servers**.

2. In the <MoreVerticalIcon /> server menu, select **Soft reboot**.

## Perform a hard reboot \{#perform-hard-reboot}

We recommend performing a hard reboot only if the server is not responding. In all other cases, [shut down and turn on the server](/vds-servers/manage/manage-server.mdx).

During a hard reboot, the server shuts down and immediately turns back on — in this case, unsaved data may be lost.

1. In the [Control panel](https://my.selectel.ru/vds/default/servers/), in the top menu, click **Products** and select **VDS servers**.

2. In the <MoreVerticalIcon /> server menu, select **Hard reboot**.
