Product Description VDS Servers

Last update:

A VDS server is a virtual machine with a local disk and one public IP address based on the Selectel cloud platform. You can quickly create a virtual machine with a fixed configuration for standard tasks: website hosting, small projects, and test or educational environments.

VDS servers run on the same infrastructure as cloud servers, but with a simplified interface, fixed configurations, and a single price per configuration. If you need custom configurations, network volumes, additional network interfaces, or other features — create a cloud server.

VDS servers are available for creation in two regions: Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Use cases

  • hosting a personal website, landing page, or educational project;
  • hosting a small web project or a blog on a content management system (CMS);
  • launching a web application with moderate load;
  • hosting a high-load application or multiple services.

How it works

To get started, create a VDS server in the control panel.

When creating a server, you choose a configuration that suits your tasks.

Each VDS server is created with one public IP address. Network throughput is up to 3 Gbit/s.

VDS servers only use a local disk. The disk size is fixed within the configuration.

Working with a VDS server

Once you have created a server, you can manage it through the control panel.

For remote access to a VDS server, you need to connect to the VDS server.

You can view metrics for VDS servers.

Areas of responsibility

Areas of responsibility at Selectel correspond to the separation of responsibilities within the IaaS cloud service delivery model.

Selectel provides

  • virtualization environment and computing systems;
  • physical security and fault tolerance of servers, power supply;
  • collection and analysis of hypervisor events and infrastructure components;
  • traffic encryption and filtering.

Selectel is not responsible for

  • configuring VDS servers: operating system and network;
  • virtual network and user account security;
  • controlling server access;
  • backing up VDS servers;
  • data encryption and integrity verification.

You are responsible for administering your VDS server: installing and configuring the necessary software.

If you need help with VDS server administration, order managed service administration.

Pricing

A VDS server is paid for using a pay-as-you-go model. Funds are deducted from the balance every hour for the used configuration of the VDS server, and external traffic is also paid for. For more details, see the Payment models and VDS server prices guide.

What is included in the price

The price of a VDS server includes:

  • computing resources (vCPU and RAM);
  • local disk;
  • one public IP address;
  • 3 TB of external traffic per month;
  • library of pre-built images;
  • DDoS protection at the L3—L4 level.

Limitations

Selectel sets an account limit and a project limit, as well as resource quotas. For more details, see the Quotas and limits guide.

A VDS server can only be created with a fixed configuration; custom resource selection is not available. Configurations are only available with a local disk; network volumes cannot be connected. You cannot increase the size of a local disk separately without changing vCPU and RAM; the resource ratio is tied to the configuration. You cannot change a configuration to one with a lower resource ratio.

Only one public IP address is available for a VDS server; you cannot add additional IP addresses. Private networks, security groups, and load balancers are not available.
