Create a FortiGate firewall backup

Last update:

The settings in this guide are relevant for FortiOS versions 6.x and 7.x. If you have a different version of FortiOS, you can find the documentation for it in the FortiGate control panel in the top-right corner or on the official FortiGate website.

  1. Connect to the firewall.

  2. Click the username in the top-right corner.

  3. Select ConfigurationBackup.

  4. If you want to copy the backup to a USB drive, insert the USB drive into the USB port of your device.

  5. Specify a location to save the backup: on the local computer or on a USB drive.

  6. If VDOMs (virtual domains) are enabled, specify whether the backup area is the global FortiGate configuration or only a specific VDOM configuration.

  7. If you selected a VDOM configuration, select the VDOM name from the list.

  8. Optional: to save an encrypted file, enable Encryption.

  9. Enter a password and repeat it once more.

  10. Save the password — you will need it to restore the configuration.

  11. Click OK.

  12. Select a location on your local computer or USB drive to save the configuration file. The configuration file will have the .conf extension.
