Manage public and Direct Connected subnets

Depending on the type of network infrastructure used in the virtual data center cluster, you can use public subnets to connect to the Internet:

  • Direct Connected subnets — for clusters on the legacy network architecture type (NSX-V). They allow you to configure internet access without using an Edge Router, configuring NAT, or configuring Firewall;
  • public subnets — for clusters on the new network infrastructure type (NSX-T). They allow you to configure internet access through an Edge Router with Firewall configuration and without NAT configuration.

Manage Direct Connected subnets

Direct Connected subnets are used only for clusters on the legacy network infrastructure type (NSX-V).

A Direct Connected subnet is a subnet with public IP addressing that connects to the Internet and is added to the virtual data center directly without using a client Edge Router (Edge Gateway). Virtual machines connect to the subnet directly and receive IP addresses from this network. Connecting a VM to the internet via a Direct Connected subnet does not require configuring Firewall and NAT.

A Direct Connected subnet can contain from 5 to 253 IPv4 addresses. The limit for Direct Connected subnets is five per organization. To increase the limit, submit a ticket.

Create a Direct Connected subnet

  1. In the Control panel, from the top menu, click Products and select Cloud powered by VMware.
  2. Go to the Virtual Data Centers section.
  3. Open the virtual data center page → Direct Connected subnets tab.
  4. Click Create DC subnet.
  5. Select the subnet size.
  6. Click Create.

Delete a Direct Connected subnet

Before deleting a Direct Connected subnet, disconnect all virtual machines and vApps from it in the Cloud Director panel. A network can only be disconnected from a powered-off vApp.

  1. In the Control panel, from the top menu, click Products and select Cloud powered by VMware.
  2. Go to the Virtual Data Centers section.
  3. Open the virtual data center page → Direct Connected subnets tab.
  4. In the subnet row, click .
  5. Enter the subnet address to confirm deletion.
  6. Click Delete.

Manage public subnets

Public subnets are used only for clusters on the new network infrastructure type (NSX-T).

Virtual machines connect to the public subnet directly and receive IP addresses from this subnet.

Create a public subnet

The subnet will not automatically have access to the Internet. To allow access, after creating the subnet, you must configure Firewall rules on the Edge Router.

  1. In the Control panel, from the top menu, click Products and select Cloud powered by VMware.
  2. Go to the Virtual Data Centers section.
  3. Open the virtual data center page → Public subnets tab.
  4. Click Create public subnet.
  5. Select the subnet size.
  6. Click Create.

Delete a public subnet

Before deleting a public subnet, disconnect all virtual machines and vApps from it in the Cloud Director panel. A network can only be disconnected from a powered-off vApp.

  2. Go to the Virtual Data Centers section.
