Edge Gateways

An Edge Gateway (EG) is a software router that allows virtual machines to access the network. An Edge Gateway implements DHCP, NAT, Load Balancing, Firewall, Dynamic Routing, VPN, and other functions.

When creating a virtual data center, a Compact size Edge router is automatically created; it is the smallest in terms of performance and cost. Basic Firewall and NAT rules are configured on it. You can manage the created Edge router, change its size, and modify its rules yourself.

The limit for Edge Gateways is shared across the entire organization and is set to 20 units. To increase this limit, create a ticket.

Edge router sizes

For Edge routers in all clusters except AMD HiFreq-1, the following sizes are available:

  • Compact;
  • Large;
  • Quad Large;
  • X-Large.

The Edge Gateway size affects its performance. You can select the Edge Gateway size when creating it or change it for an existing one. To improve Edge Gateway stability, avoid packet loss, and prevent other issues, we recommend increasing the Edge Gateway size to meet the required workload.

In the AMD HiFreq-1 cluster, the Edge router size is fixed and cannot be changed.

Edge router IP addresses

IP addresses are assigned to an Edge router and used to access the virtual data center from external networks, such as the internet.

An Edge router is always created with a base IP address.

The IP address limit is organization-wide and is set to 20 addresses. To increase the limit, create a ticket.

Add IP address

  1. In the Control panel, on the top menu, click Products and select VMware-based Cloud.
  2. Go to the Virtual Data Centers section.
  3. Open the Virtual Data Center page → the Edge Routers tab.
  4. In the Edge router card, expand the IP Addresses block.
  5. Click Add IP Address.
  6. Specify the number of IP addresses to add.
  7. Click Add.

Remove IP address

You can only remove IP addresses that you added manually. The base IP address cannot be removed.

  1. In the Control panel, on the top menu, click Products and select VMware-based Cloud.
  2. Go to the Virtual Data Centers section.
  3. Open the Virtual Data Center page → the Edge Routers tab.
  4. In the Edge router card, expand the IP Addresses block.
  5. In the IP address line, click .
  6. Enter the IP address to confirm the deletion.
  7. Click Delete.

Edge router redundancy

For your information

Edge Gateway redundancy is unavailable in the cluster AMD HiFreq-1.

To improve Edge Gateway fault tolerance, you can enable Edge Gateway redundancy (High Availability). If issues occur with the primary Edge Gateway, a failover to the standby one will occur within 15 seconds. All primary Edge settings are automatically replicated to the standby one.

All network equipment is fully redundant. The failure of any network device will not affect the availability of virtual machines in public and local networks.

Create an Edge router

  1. In the Control panel, on the top menu, click Products and select VMware-based Cloud.
  2. Go to the Virtual Data Centres section.
  3. Open the virtual data centre page → the Edge Gateways tab.
  4. Click Create Edge Gateway.
  5. Select the Edge router size.
  6. Click Create.

Change Edge router settings

You can change the Edge Gateway size and enable redundancy (High Availability).

  1. In the Control panel, on the top menu, click Products and select VMware-based Cloud.
  2. Go to the Virtual Data Centres section.
  3. Open the virtual data centre page → the Edge Gateways tab.
  4. In the menu of the gateway, click Edit settings.
  5. Apply your changes.
  6. Click Save. After the size is changed, the Edge Gateway and the IP addresses on it may be unavailable for 30 seconds.

Enable SSH access to the Edge router

  1. From the control panel, open the Cloud Director panel: in the top menu click ProductsVMware-based CloudCloud Director section.
  2. Open the virtual data center page.
  3. Go to the NetworkingEdges section.
  4. Open the page of the required Edge.
  5. Click SERVICES.
  6. Open the Edge Settings tab.
  7. In the SSH Status block, turn on the Enabled toggle.
  8. Configure the Firewall.

Delete an Edge router

Before deleting an Edge router, remove the routed IP addresses and networks from it.

  1. In the Control panel, on the top menu, click Products and select VMware-based Cloud.
  2. Go to the Virtual Data Centres section.
  3. Open the virtual data centre page → the Edge Gateways tab.
  4. In the menu of the gateway, click Delete Edge Gateway.
