# Create a network in the public cloud

The network is created within an [Edge Router](/public-cloud/manage-networks/edge-routers/). Without using an Edge Router, you can connect a virtual data center to the internet only via a Direct Connected subnet; more details are in the instruction [Public cloud networks](/public-cloud/manage-networks/about-networks/).

1. From the [control panel](https://my.selectel.ru/vmware/) open the Cloud Director panel: in the top menu, click **Products** → **VMware-based Cloud** → **Cloud Director**.
2. Open the **Networking** → **Networks**.
3. Click **New**. The network creation wizard will start.
4. In the **Scope** step, select a data center or a group of data centers.
5. Click **Next**.
6. In the **Network Type** step, select the [network type](/public-cloud/manage-networks/about-networks.mdx#private-network). For internet access, a **Routed** network type is required.
7. Click **Next**.
8. In the **Edge Connection** step, select an Edge Router.
9. In the **Connection Type** field, select the **Internal** interface type.
10. Click **Next**.
11. In the **General** step, enter the network name.
12. In the **Gateway CIDR** field, specify the gateway in CIDR format. CIDR is a format that specifies the IP address and the number of subnet mask bits (for example, `10.10.1.1/24`).
13. Optional: to allow the network to be used in other virtual data centers within the same organization, enable the **Shared** toggle.
14. Click **Next**.
15. In the **Static IP pool** step, specify the range of addresses that will be automatically assigned to virtual machines in the format `<ip_address_1> — <ip_address_2>`. Specify:

    * `<ip_address_1>` — the starting subnet address;
    * `<ip_address_2>` — the ending subnet IP address.

At the bottom, the number of available IPs will be indicated (`total:20`).
16. Optional: in the **DNS** section, specify the DNS for your network (for example, `8.8.8.8`). By default, the gateway address is specified, but it must be configured separately.
17. Click **Finish**.
