Bind domain to IP address

For your information

We've released new version of DNS hosting (actual) and stop supporting and developing legacy. Domains and resource records in DNS hosting (legacy) continue to work, we will warn you in advance about their discontinuation.

Recommended transfer domains to DNS hosting (actual) now to avoid disruption of sites when DNS hosting (legacy) is down.

If you registered after January 30, you will only have access to the DNS hosting (actual).

To open a site on a server with a specific IP address when you click on a domain name, you need to associate the domain name and IP address using an A-record.

  1. If you don't already have a zone, create an area.

  2. Add an A-record with the value of your server's IP address.

  3. If the domain is not yet delegated to Selectel NS servers, delegate domain control.

Create a zone

A zone is a logical union of the resource records of a domain and its subdomains.

  1. In control panel go to DNSDomain zones.

  2. Make sure you create a zone in the right project. The current project can be viewed on the left above the section menu.

  3. Click Add a zone.

  4. Enter the DNS zone name — the name of the domain with a dot, for example, example.com.

  5. Click Add. NS and SOA resource records will be automatically created in the zone.

Add A-record

  1. In control panels go to DNSDomain zones.

  2. Open the zone page.

  3. Click Add. In DNS hosting (actual), resource records are stored in groups — one group contains all resource records of a domain with the same type, e.g., all IP addresses of a domain at the DNS balancing.

  4. To create a group of resource records for the primary domain (zone name), leave the field Group name empty. For example, if you leave the field blank for a zone example.com.a group of records will be created with the name example.com.

  5. Select the type of resource records in the group — A.

  6. Enter TTL or leave the default value. TTL is the time in seconds for which a resource entry in the NS server cache is considered up to date and does not need to be re-cached. The TTL of a group applies to all resource records in the group.

  7. Enter the value of the entry — the IP address of the server where the site is located.

  8. Optional: enter a comment — any additional information about the group. The comment will be displayed only in DNS hosting.

  9. Click Add.

  10. Wait for the added resource record group to propagate to the DNS servers. The propagation time can take up to 72 hours.

  11. Optional: check resource records. If 72 hours after creation the resource records have not appeared on the DNS servers, file a ticket.

Delegate domain management

In order to transfer control of domain resource records to Selectel servers, the domain must be delegated — you must specify these servers in the domain's NS records.

  1. Go to the control panel of the domain registrar where your domain is registered.

  2. In the NS entries, replace the values with Selectel's NS servers: a.ns.selectel.ru, b.ns.selectel.ru, c.ns.selectel.ru, d.ns.selectel.ru. Each server must be listed in a separate entry.
