Cloud server migration FAQ
How do I increase a quota or limit for disks and other project resources?
Each project has quotas and limits set:
- limits — the maximum amount of resources that can be created in a project. Limits are set automatically when creating a project and may differ across pools and pool segments;
- quotas — restrictions within limits to control expenses. When creating a project, quotas equal to limits are allocated for each resource. Once the amount of a resource reaches the quota value, you will not be able to create new resources.
If there are not enough quotas to create resources, you can change them yourself. A quota value cannot exceed the project limit.
If you need more quotas to create resources than defined by the project limit, increase the limits. To do this, create a ticket and specify:
- ID. You can copy it in the Control panel: in the top menu, click IAM → Projects → in the project row, in the ID column, click ;
- pool where the limit needs to be increased;
- new limit value.
After a Selectel specialist increases the limit, change the quotas yourself in the Control panel.
Can I transfer virtual machine data if there is no way to export an image or disk snapshot?
If you are currently unable to download an image, snapshot, or VM disk backup from another provider's control panel, Selectel cannot extract them for you — this issue must be resolved with your provider's support team. Selectel only provides resources for hosting infrastructure — exporting and uploading an image, snapshot, or cloud server disk backup is performed by clients.
- If a VM image, snapshot, or disk backup is available in external sources, you can upload them to the image storage. For more details, see the Upload and create image guide.
- Prepare the image to make it fully compatible with the Selectel Cloud Platform. Use the Prepare an ISO image to work with the cloud platform guide.
- Then create a cloud server from your source.
Why does the "No valid host was found" or "not enough free resources" error occur when creating a cloud server, and what should I do?
Having quotas in a project does not mean that free resources are available in the selected location. In some pools, there may be issues with creating new resources — in such cases, incidents are opened, and their root causes are addressed by Selectel specialists. To monitor cloud server availability and incidents in locations, use the status page.
If errors occur, we recommend creating cloud servers in other pools or waiting for the incident to be resolved. There are no exact timeframes for resolving emerging incidents.
Selectel does not provide the ability to reserve resources for the future. You can check resource availability via tickets once a day. To create cloud servers with GPUs, check the actual availability of graphics cards in pool segments and retry creating them — reserving GPUs is also not possible.
Why is the cloud server not responding via SSH or unreachable from the internet?
A cloud server may not respond due to incorrect server OS settings, network errors on the client side, or TSPU traffic filtering. Selectel does not restrict access to addresses, except for a number of blocked TCP/UDP ports and internet resources.
To determine the cause, perform diagnostics on server unavailability:
- run the
mtr -b <address>andssh -v root@<address>commands on Linux or run diagnostics using WinMTR on Windows; - run traceroute in both directions;
- check port availability using nmap and telnet;
- perform a TLS check;
- collect a traffic dump.
Provide the diagnostic results. To do this, create a ticket and specify the collected data. Selectel specialists will analyze the issue for excessive filtering, but we do not guarantee problem resolution or resolution timeframes. As a workaround, you can use a proxy server in Russia.
If a cloud server is unreachable via its public address immediately after creation, we recommend that you:
- connect a direct public IP address or a public subnet;
- recreate the server in another location;
- or replace the public floating IP address.
Is a Windows license provided and how do I activate the OS on a cloud server?
Distribution and activation of Windows licenses are not performed by Selectel: the SPLA licensing agreement with Microsoft expired on September 1, 2022, licenses are not provided, and they are not included in the server cost. Cloud server Windows images are configured to run without activation — the OS will not shut down after the evaluation period ends. If necessary, you can purchase a license separately and activate it yourself, as well as use your own licenses or available activation options.
