General information about the Metrics service

The Metrics service is designed to collect, store, and analyze metrics for Selectel products.

You can collect metrics for:

Metrics allow you to evaluate resource utilization, identify bottlenecks in applications and infrastructure, and distinguish one-time anomalies from systemic degradation.

How it works

The Metrics service automatically collects metrics on the status of your resources. A metric is a quantitative performance indicator in the Prometheus format.

A metric represents a single record and consists of three parameters:

  • metric_name – metric name;
  • label_name – metric label name;
  • label_value – label value.

Metrics related to specific products or services are grouped into namespaces. Namespaces are fixed and cannot be changed. You can view available namespaces in the Metrics reference guide.

Custom dashboards

In the Control Panel, you can build custom dashboards — sets of charts for Selectel product metrics grouped for a specific task. A dashboard can be created specifying the projects and locations to pull data from. Widgets are then added to it. You can add up to 30 widgets to a single dashboard. Each widget represents one or more metric queries with a common chart. Widgets can be grouped into logical sections, and text notes can be used to label sections and explain what to look at.

Widget queries are configured in two ways:

  • using the query builder, where the metric and filters are selected from lists;
  • or directly in PromQL.

You can add a maximum of five queries per widget.

Filters can be configured at the dashboard level – they apply to all widgets at once. If needed, you can assign custom label values to an individual widget.

Third-party applications are not required to build dashboards, and metrics remain accessible for Grafana via the API.

System dashboards

In the Control Panel, you can view system dashboards — sets of charts with metrics for Selectel products and services displaying general indicators. System dashboards cannot be customized, but their data can be filtered.

Filters can be set at the dashboard level — they apply to all charts at once.
