General information about Internet access
For Selectel products Dedicated servers; Colocation; Cloud platform (Cloud servers, Managed Kubernetes, Managed Databases); VMware-based cloud a standard connection to the Internet (public network) is organized:
- internet channel from data center network providers;
- a public IP address from the Selectel IP pool;
- traffic consumption monitoring in accordance with the product's traffic consumption model;
- routing information management by Selectel.

If you need to use your own IP address block, Internet channel, monitor traffic consumption yourself, or manage routing information for all products, you can choose another way to connect to the Internet.
Ways to connect to the Internet
Connection via BGP protocol
Connection via BGP protocol allows you to use your own AS and IP address block for the public network, as well as dynamically manage your routing information. In this case, the Internet channel and traffic management (pricing) remain on the Selectel side.
To connect this service, you need your own router:
- for dedicated servers — a firewall, a hosted router, or routing software deployed on the server;
- for VMware-based cloud — EDGE;
- for cloud servers — routing software deployed on the server.
The router initiates BGP sessions and terminates subnets.
PI prefix announcement
PI prefix announcement allows you to use your own PI (provider-independent) IP addresses for the public network. In this case, the Internet channel and traffic management (pricing) remain on the Selectel side.
When you enable the service for a product, a subnet is added, and the PI prefix of IP addresses is announced via the Selectel AS.
Connection via BGP + anycast subnetwork
Connection via BGP and using an anycast subnetwork allows you to use a public anycast subnetwork from the Selectel range in different pools.
When enabling the service, your own AS is used, or a private Selectel AS is assigned.
To connect this service, you need your own routers:
- for dedicated servers — a firewall, a hosted router, or routing software deployed on the server;
- for VMware-based cloud — EDGE;
- for cloud servers — routing software deployed on the server.
The routers initiate two BGP sessions and terminate the subnets. Both routers announce the same prefixes.
Direct Connect — physical port
Direct Connect — physical port allows you to arrange an Internet connection from a third-party service provider.
When you connect the service, a physical port is assigned on the Selectel access switch, to which the cross-connection to your provider's equipment is connected; a VLAN with this port is added to your account. You create a private network of the global router that integrates your servers and the VLAN with the provider's port. The provider configures NAT on their router from this private network to the Internet.
You arrange the connection on the service provider side yourself: verify the possibility of connecting the provider to Selectel, check the cross-connection, and pay for the communication channels.
When connecting to the Internet via Direct Connect, you cannot assign public IP addresses from the provider's pool to your servers. To do this, choose another way to connect to the Internet.
