# General information about the Direct Connect service

Direct Connect is a connection between external network infrastructure and infrastructure within Selectel. With Direct Connect, you can connect equipment in a Selectel data center to any external infrastructure, as well as connect to the internet through a [telecom operator](#telecom-operators-at-selectel-data-centers) in a Selectel data center.

If you need to set up a connection with a global cloud platform — AWS, Alibaba Cloud, and others, use the [Global Connect](/global-connect/about-global-connect.mdx) service.

The Direct Connect service is provided in two types:

* [physical port](#physical-port-principle-of-operation) (port to a third-party operator) — leasing a port on a Selectel access switch;
* [logical port](#logical-port-principle-of-operation) — leasing a ready-made connection between Selectel and partner operators.

Selectel's infrastructure may include [dedicated](/dedicated/) and [cloud servers](/cloud-servers/), [cloud databases](/managed-databases/), [Managed Kubernetes](/managed-kubernetes/) cluster nodes, [file storage](/file-storage/), [colocated equipment](/server-colocation/), [VMware-based cloud](/public-cloud/).

## How it works \{#principle-of-operation}

### Physical port \{#physical-port-principle-of-operation}

A port is provided on a Selectel access switch. This port is used to connect a telecom operator line that leads to your external infrastructure or provides internet access. [Equipment](#hardware) used to set up the connection depends on the bandwidth—1 or 10 Gbps—as well as the connection type: copper or optical.

You choose the [telecom operator](#telecom-operators-at-selectel-data-centers) yourself, lease and pay for the line, and verify the cross-connect to the operator. To connect to external infrastructure, the selected operator must be present at the facility where the external infrastructure is located and in the [availability zone](#telecom-operators-at-selectel-data-centers) where the Selectel switch is located.

Selectel switches are installed not only in our own data centers but also at third-party facilities where most well-known telecom operators are present:

* St. Petersburg — Miran data center and Raduga business center;
* Moscow — MMTS-9, DataPro I data center.

If your external infrastructure is located at one of these facilities, you can use a direct connection to infrastructure within Selectel without leasing a line from a telecom operator.

#### Equipment \{#hardware}

**1 Gbps**:

* copper cross-connect and copper SFP RJ45 interface;
* or optical cross-connect and optical interface:

  * SFP 1G LR;
  * SFP 1G WDM (BiDi) LR Tx1310/Rx1550 LC;
  * SFP 1G WDM (BiDi) LR Tx1550/Rx1310 LC.

**10 Gbps**:

* optical cross-connect and optical interface:

  * SFP+ 10G LR;
  * SFP+ 10G WDM (BiDi) LR Tx1270/Rx1330 LC;
  * SFP+ 10G WDM (BiDi) LR Tx1330/Rx1270 LC.

### Logical port \{#logical-port-principle-of-operation}

A ready-made private connection is provided between Selectel and a partner operator; RETN, MSK-IX, and Yandex operators are available. The connection is pre-configured and reserved.

Network connectivity in the connection between partner infrastructure and Selectel is provided via a dedicated VLAN, and within the Selectel infrastructure via the [global router](/global-router/about-global-router.mdx).

## Pricing \{#price}

### Physical port \{#physical-port-price}

The cost of the Direct Connect — physical port service depends on:

* the location of the Selectel switch — in a proprietary Selectel DC or at a third-party facility;
* port speed — 1 or 10 Gbps;
* whether you need redundant channels.

If you need a telecom operator line or a cross-connect to connect to a physical port, these services are paid for separately.
