KVM console
The KVM console (IPMI) is an interface for server administration and managing a dedicated server, regardless of the CPU, BIOS, or operating system status. It is implemented using a BMC controller integrated into the motherboard. It is used for maintenance and remote server management when you cannot connect via SSH or RDP.
Learn more about IPMI in the Selectel blog article IPMI — an overview of the technology.
The KVM console is available by default for every dedicated server, except for Chipcore Line servers. For these servers, you can connect the additional service Temporary IP-KVM connection for Chipcore Line servers.
Connect to a server via the KVM console only from the server page in the control panel.
The following operations are available in the KVM console menu:
- full-screen console display mode;
- power on, power off, or restart the server;
- send key combinations;
- reconnect to the console.
Connect to a server via the KVM console
The connection process and the management interface for the KVM console may vary slightly for different servers. This depends on the server's motherboard and the BMC controller integrated into it.
If you have launched the KVM console for a single server multiple times, text input will only be enabled for the tab you opened first.
- In the control panel, on the top menu, click Products → Dedicated Servers.
- On the server page, click . The KVM console will open in a new browser tab. If necessary, expand the KVM console window.
- If you have an X8DTU motherboard, synchronize the cursor.
- If the KVM console asks for permission to run, confirm it by clicking Run.
- If the KVM console requests authorization, place the cursor in the Username and Password fields sequentially and click username and password in the bottom-right corner of the window. The values will be filled in automatically. If you do not see the buttons in the bottom-right corner, reconnect to the console.
- If the KVM console management panel appears, select Remote control in the left menu. On the remote access page, click Launch H5Viewer.
- Log in to the server. You can view the login (username) and password (password) in the control panel: in the top menu, click Products → Dedicated Servers → Servers → server page → Operating System tab → Username and Password fields. The password is visible for 24 hours from the start of OS installation or configuration changes. If you are connecting to a server with Windows OS, ensure that your keyboard layout is set to English when entering the password.
