# KVM console

The KVM console (IPMI) is an interface for server administration and managing a dedicated server regardless of CPU, BIOS, or operating system status. It is implemented based on the BMC controller integrated into the motherboard. It is used for technical maintenance and remote server management when you cannot connect via SSH or RDP.

The KVM console is available by default for every dedicated server, except for Chipcore Line servers. For these, you can  [activate the additional service Temporary IP-KVM connection for Chipcore Line servers](/dedicated/about/additional-services.mdx#additional-services-with-one-time-payment).

[Connect to a server via the KVM console](#connect-via-kvm-console) only from the server page in the control panel.

The following operations are available in the KVM console menu:

* full-screen console display mode;
* power on, power off, or restart the server;
* send key combinations;
* reconnect to the console.

## Connect to a server via the KVM console \{#connect-via-kvm-console}

For different servers, the connection process and server management interface via the KVM console may vary slightly. This depends on the type of server motherboard and the integrated BMC controller.

If you have launched the KVM console for a single server multiple times, text input will only be enabled for the tab you opened first.

1. In the [control panel](https://my.selectel.ru/servers/), on the top menu, click **Products** → **Dedicated Servers**.
2. In the server card, click <TerminalIcon />. The KVM console will open in a new browser tab. If necessary, [expand the KVM console window](#expand-the-kvm-console-window).
3. If you have an X8DTU motherboard, [synchronize the cursor](#synchronize-cursor).
4. If the KVM console asks for permission to launch, confirm it by clicking **Run**.
5. If the KVM console requests authorization, move the cursor to the **Username** field and then the **Password** field and click on **username** and **password** in the bottom right corner of the window. The field values will be filled in automatically. If you do not see the buttons in the bottom right corner, reconnect to the console.
6. If the KVM console management panel appears, select the **Remote control** section in the left menu. On the remote access page, click **Launch H5Viewer**.
7. Log in to the server. You can find the **login** (username) and **password** (password) in the [control panel](https://my.selectel.ru/servers): in the top menu, click **Products** → **Dedicated Servers** → **Servers** → server page → **Operating System** tab → **Login** and **Password**. The password is available for 24 hours from the moment OS installation or configuration changes start. If you are connecting to a Windows server, ensure the English keyboard layout is enabled when entering the password.

## Working with the KVM console \{#working-with-the-kvm-console}

### Expand the KVM console window \{#expand-the-kvm-console-window}

1. In the KVM console window, open the **Options** → **Preference**.
2. Open the **Window** tab.
3. Uncheck the **Auto resize window** checkbox.
4. Click **Ok**. A button to expand the KVM console window will appear in the top right corner.
5. Expand the window.

### Synchronize the cursor \{#synchronize-cursor}

For servers with an X8DTU motherboard, you must synchronize the cursor every time you connect.

1. Ensure you have an X8DTU motherboard. If you have a different motherboard, [create a ticket](https://my.selectel.ru/tickets/create/).
2. In the KVM console window, open the **Mouse** menu.
3. Uncheck the **Synchronize Cursor** checkbox.
4. Check the **Synchronize Cursor** checkbox.
