Change disk type

You can change the type only for a network volume — to another network volume or to a local drive.

To another network

You cannot change the network volume type directly — you need to create a new volume with the desired type.

1. In the current disk's pool segment:

   • create a volume image;
   • or detach the current volume from the cloud server and create a new volume from it.

2. Optional: attach the created volume to the server and detach the previous one.

3. Optional: if you attached the volume as a boot (system) volume, reboot the server.

To a local

It is not possible to change the network volume type to a local disk directly — create a new cloud server with a local disk.

1. In the current disk's pool segment:

   • create a volume image;
   • or detach the current volume from the cloud server and create a new volume from it.

2. Create a new cloud server with a local drive and select the created image or volume as the source.

Reduce disk size

It is not possible to reduce a local disk.

You cannot reduce the size of a network volume directly, as it may compromise the integrity of the disk's file system and data — you can create a new, smaller disk.

1. In the pool segment of the current volume, create an empty volume of a smaller size.
2. Attach the created volume to the cloud server.
3. Boot the server into Rescue mode.
4. Transfer data from the old volume to the new one — copy files manually or use the dd utility.
5. Optional: detach the old volume from the server and delete the volume.

Increase disk size

You cannot increase a local drive directly — you can change the configuration of the cloud server to which it is attached. The local drive will expand automatically.

You can increase a network volume by following the instructions below. After increasing, you must prepare the disk for use.

Another way to increase disk space on a cloud server is to attach an additional volume.

warning

Before working with partitions and the file system, we recommend creating a disk image, snapshot, or another disk from this disk to avoid data loss in case of an error.

Control panel

1. In the Control panel, from the top menu, click Products and select Cloud Servers.

2. Go to the Volumes section.

3. Open the volume page → Settings tab.

4. In the Size field, click .

5. Specify the new volume size in GB, taking into account maximum volume size limits.

6. Click Save.

7. Prepare the disk for use:

   • if you increased a boot volume, reboot the cloud server or expand the volume according to the instructions below;
   • if you have increased an additional disk, expand the disk according to the instructions below.

OpenStack CLI

1. Open the OpenStack CLI.

2. Change the disk size:

   openstack volume set --size <size> <volume>

   Specify:

   • <size> — volume size in GB, taking into account maximum volume size limits;
   • <volume> — ID or volume name. You can view the list with openstack volume list

3. Prepare the disk for use:

   • if you increased a boot volume, reboot the cloud server or expand the volume according to the instructions below;
   • if you have increased an additional disk, expand the disk according to the instructions below.

Preparing the disk for use after increasing

If you have increased a disk, you must expand it — the configuration steps depend on the operating system.

Linux

1. Connect to the server.

2. Open the list of all disks connected to the server:

   lsblk

   Example output:

   NAME    MAJ:MIN RM  SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
   sda       8:0    0    8G  0 disk
   ├─sda1    8:1    0    8G  0 part /
   └─sda14   8:14   0    8M  0 part
   sdb       8:16   0    7G  0 disk

3. Expand the volume (using growpart) and run filesystem resizing (via resize2fs):

   growpart /dev/<sdb> 1
   resize2fs /dev/<sdb1>

   Specify <sdb> — the disk that needs to be expanded.

Windows

1. Connect to the server.
2. Open the built-in Disk Management utility.
3. Right-click the disk and select Extend Volume.

Change IOPS count

You can change the number of IOPS only for a network volume of the Universal SSD v2 or Fast SSD v2 type in the AVAILABLE and IN-USE statuses. The number of IOPS changes is not limited.

1. In the Control panel, from the top menu, click Products and select Cloud Servers.
2. Go to the Volumes section.
3. Open the volume page → Settings tab.
4. In the IOPS field, click Edit.
5. Specify the new IOPS count.
6. Click Confirm changes.
