CDN Product Description

Last update:

CDN is a geographically distributed network of caching CDN servers that allows you to speed up static content delivery and reduce the load on your primary server.

The product supports user types and roles.

Tasks addressed

CDN is suitable for any internet project. CDN tasks:

  • accelerating the loading of static content (images, CSS, JS, videos);
  • reducing the load on the origin server;
  • ensuring stable website performance during peak loads;
  • improving content availability for users in different regions.

How it works

Upon the first file request, the CDN server downloads it from the content origin—the primary server where the content is stored—and saves the file to its cache. For subsequent requests for the same file, the CDN server delivers the file from the cache without accessing the origin.

A file is cached only on the CDN server that received the request, not on all servers in the network. If a user from another region requests the same file, the CDN server closest to that user checks for the file in its cache. If it is not in the cache, the CDN server contacts an intermediate server, called a shielding server.

The shielding server caches all files requested by CDN servers. If the shielding server has the required file in its cache, it delivers it to the CDN server. If the file is not there, it requests it from the content origin, saves it to its own cache, and delivers it to the CDN server.

CDN servers do not store files permanently; they cache them for a period specified in the settings, which is 24 hours by default. If a file has not been requested for a long time, it is automatically removed from the CDN server cache. When the file is requested again, the cycle repeats.
