# General information about projects

A project is an organizational unit that acts as a logical container for isolating resources and managing [user](/access-control/user-types.mdx) access. For some resources in a project, you can set creation restrictions — [project limits and quotas](/access-control/projects/quotas.mdx). Resources within the same project can be located in different [locations](/infrastructure/locations.mdx).

In projects, you can manage resources only for [products that support working with projects](#selectel-products-that-support-projects).

The first project (My First project) is created automatically upon [account registration in the Control Panel](/account/registration.mdx). If you need to, [delete this project](/access-control/projects/manage/delete-project.mdx) and [create a new one](/access-control/projects/create-project.mdx).

You must select a project when ordering or creating a product. After ordering or creating, you can move resources to another project. The duration of the transfer depends on the product and the resource you want to move. For instance, you can [transfer cloud platform volumes](/cloud-servers/volumes/transfer-volume.mdx#transfer-volume-to-another-project-or-account) or [transfer a dedicated server](/dedicated/manage/transfer-to-another-project.mdx) quickly, while [transferring a cloud server](/cloud-servers/manage/transfer-server.mdx#transfer-server) will take more time.

Records of project operations are saved in [audit logs](/audit-logs/about-audit-logs.mdx).

## Project management: user types and permissions \{#user-types-and-permissions}

Projects can be managed by users of all types:

* [Account owner](/access-control/user-types.mdx#account-owner) — via the Control Panel; ;
* [panel users](/access-control/user-types.mdx#panel-users) — via the Control Panel;
* [service users](/access-control/user-types.mdx#service-users) — via the [Selectel product API](/api/) and other automation tools: [OpenStack CLI](/cloud-servers/tools/openstack-cli/), [Terraform](/terraform/providers/), [selvpc](/cloud-servers/tools/selvpc.mdx).

To manage project resources, a user or a service user must be assigned a permission granting access to the necessary project or to the entire account for access to all projects. Within a permission, a role defines which operations will be available to the user. You can determine which role is suitable for a user in the [Role Reference](/access-control/role-reference.mdx) guide.

If a user does not have access to a project, you can add them to the project, see more in the instructions [Add project administrator](/access-control/projects/manage/add-project-administrator.mdx) and [Add project viewer](/access-control/projects/manage/add-project-viewer.mdx).
